Angela Shaw, a proud Cleveland native, has devoted over two decades to advocacy, equity, and public service. After earning her Political Science degree from Bowling Green State University, an internship with the Lucas County Juvenile Court inspired her passion for supporting youth and families. She went on to serve with AmeriCorps, design afterschool programs, and later work as an Investigative Probation Officer.
After relocating to California in 1998, Angela expanded her impact as a Behavioral Specialist and then rose to Field Operations Director at the Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program. Today, with LA Fire Justice, she continues advancing community empowerment and transformative justice.
Why did you join the LA Fire Justice team?
I chose LA Fire Justice because I was looking to continue doing meaningful work in the community. During my time working in mental health, many of the clients I supported lived in homes and group homes in the Altadena area. I developed strong connections with those families, and that work made a deep impression on me.
When the fires happened in Altadena, I immediately reached out to make sure my family in the area was safe—but soon after, my thoughts turned to the many families I had worked with there. Even though I’m no longer connected to these families directly, the concern I felt reminded me of the bond I still have with that community.
LA Fire Justice gives me the opportunity to reconnect with Altadena in a powerful way—to continue serving a community I care deeply about, and to contribute to healing, justice, and resilience where it’s needed most.
What is your favorite thing to do in LA?
My favorite thing to do in LA is explore the city's farmers markets and festivals.
